After a personal tragedy that devastates his world, Sheel (Sakshi Tanwar), a humble 47-year-old wife-and-mother, is thrown into extraordinary circumstances in her quest to uncover the truth.

Mai Season 1 Review – 'Mai' echoes the same crime-and-vengeance genre as the 2017 Bollywood thriller- 'Mom'- starring the late Sridevi and Raveena Tandon's comeback film 'Maatr'. They are comparable in many aspects, most notably the original idea, which revolves around a humble and ordinary mother seeking retribution for her daughter.

In this series, Sheel's life is turned upside down when she witnesses the tragic death of her daughter Supriya. At first glance, it appears to be an accident, but Sheel quickly realizes that something is not right, and Supriya's death may have been deliberate murder. After that, she sets off on a journey to discover the truth.

Parallelly, Farooq Siddiqui (Ankur Ratan), a Special Police Forces officer (SPF), is on the verge of uncovering the people behind a medical scam and money laundering case.

Which is led by Jawahar (Prashanth Narayanan) and his right lady. Neelam (Raima Sen), manages the business along with Raghu (Saurabh Dubey), Keshav, Prashant (Anant Vidhat), and Shankar (Vaibhav Raj Gupta).

Be it, Farooq, as Supriya's lover, or Sheel as the caretaker of Jawahar's mother in an old age home, the characters in the series are either directly or indirectly linked to the mother-daughter duo.

The directors - debutants Atul Mongia and Anshai Lal, who made their directorial debut with 'Phillauri' (2017) - managed to extract outstanding performances from the cast. On-screen, Sheel, who is both emotional and vulnerable at the same time, and Supriya, his mute daughter, who manages to express her thoughts, are both innocent.

The use of close-up shots of the protagonist by the director adds to the tension. Wearing many hats in the project, Mongia is the producer-producer and co-wrote this six-part crime-thriller with Tamal Sen and Amita Vyas, which, together, explores the sorrows and pains of the mother-daughter duo. , enliven human relationships. and sacrifices, political scandals, money laundering, and much more.

This fictional drama, like other crime sagas streaming in the OTT space, uses Lucknow as a backdrop to portray the right and wrong practices in the city that affect the lives of common people. The first few episodes are progressing well,

Complete with an unbelievable emotional outburst from modesty, the story soon begins to waver. The script is well written in terms of connecting all the elements, though it seems unnecessarily stretched at points to keep the audience's attention throughout the episode. Plus, there are too many characters and subplots, and not all of them get enough time to justify their existence.

For example, Kalpana's (Seema Pahwa) background of being a victim of an abusive marriage and later a criminal is vaguely described. The story was unable to connect with the audience as Kalpana's story was casually told during her conversation with Sheel. In addition, many situations in which a shill seems capable of doing practically anything, from carving walls to deceiving masterminds, are impossible.

Despite everything, 'My' is busy centering Sakshi, which slows down the pace of the show, and makes it less impressive in some cases.

However, there is ample room to note the different types of human interactions, such as Sheel's developed dynamics with her husband Yash and the extended family that includes her brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and their child or her bond with Kalpana (Seema Pahwa), His side throughout. If Manas Mittal's editing had been more eclectic, it could have been a taut thriller,

Each episode - which is about an hour-long - could have been trimmed to keep up with the pace of the show. Above all, it leaves enough hints for the next season as well.

Sakshi Tanwar is perfect and dominates the screen playing a grieving mother who rapidly changes from meek to ruthless after the tragic incident: the agony of not knowing who killed her daughter and why is evident. Later, Sakshi's Sheel, a nurse-cum-caretaker in an old age home, sets out on a journey to settle accounts with some dangerous people. All the weight is yet to be lifted for Tanwar, and he is confident in every way.

Vamika Gabbi, who was last seen as Madan Lal's wife in the Hindi film '83', plays a young mute girl who is the victim of the series and is particularly effective. Vivek Mushran, who plays Sheel's husband Yash, suffers from not being overweight as the rest of the cast including members of his extended family.

All the characters are believable and contribute meaningfully to the plot. The SPF officer, unlike Salman's Chulbul Pandey or any other manly cop, is a no-nonsense cop who understands his job well. Perhaps the result of this is that Ankur Ratan as Farooq seems an outcast in many action moments.

Prashanth slips into the skin of his character as Jawahar/Mohandas with the least amount of fuss and still delivers a performance that makes us hate his character. Raima can be portrayed as a beauty with wit in her role as Neelam, yet she maintains the same blank look throughout the series.

Prashant and Shankar, played by Anant Vidhat and Vaibhav Raj Gupta (Annu Bhaiya from Gullak), are twisted characters played by them well.

It's hard to keep track of so many characters in a show that is essentially a whodunit but deals with a variety of perverse motives. But, all things considered,

'My' is a bleak and relentless crime-thriller that proves to be compelling if not always easy to watch. The play slows down in the middle, and yet, there is constant action that keeps the audience on edge.
